The Fascinating Story of Portugal: History for Kids

The Beginning of a Country

Portugal became a country in the year 1143, when a young nobleman named Dom Afonso Henriques decided to make it independent. His mother wanted to unite Portugal with her own kingdom of León, but Dom Afonso had a different idea. He fought for independence, won land for Portugal, and became the very first King. That’s how the country of Portugal was born. Later on, other kingdoms around it joined together to become Spain. Today, Portugal and Spain are friendly neighbors.

The Age of Discoveries

One of the most exciting parts of Portuguese history is the time of great sea adventures, known as the Age of Discoveries. In 1425, Prince Henry (also called Henry the Navigator) helped lead many trips by ship. The first one went to Ceuta in North Africa. After that, Portuguese explorers found many new places, including parts of Africa, India, Japan, and even Brazil.

These trips taught people in Europe many things. They learned about new cultures, foods, and ways to build ships or read the stars for direction. This made Portugal very important in the world and helped everyone understand more about the planet we all share.

A New Government

In 1820, Portugal became a democracy. That means people could vote to choose their leaders. But for many years after that, voting was taken away. A man named Salazar became a dictator and didn’t allow anyone else to be in charge. He stayed in power for about 50 years.

The Peaceful Revolution

In 1974, the people of Portugal wanted freedom again. They came together in what is now called the Carnation Revolution. On April 25th, they asked the army for help. The army agreed, and something amazing happened: no one had to fight. A flower seller gave red carnations to the soldiers to wear instead of using weapons. This is why the day is now remembered as the peaceful “flower revolution.”

Today, April 25th is a national holiday in Portugal. People celebrate freedom, peace, and the end of the dictatorship.
